This playful interpretation of the Ionic column is an exploration of classical architectural and sculptural motifs. Locally sourced red cedar has been hand-carved intuitively from a single block, guided by the nature of the wood grain. Its bulb is reflected or shielded by an adjustable weightless steel shade. I am British Iraqi furniture designer and architect specializing in wood and metal as a craft. Growing up immersed in a Middle Eastern culture, I was exposed to different regions in the south where the world's oldest civilizations are located. These experiences influenced me to continue questioning how we can approach modern design solutions in a way that remains sensitive to its regional culture.
